Detour from plan

25th July

From Sunrise Camp to northernmost entry, Punda Maria. One long game drive south to Swingdhezi for human fuel.

Onwards south to Marponi and a very nice 3 bedroom house, government run.
Dinner at the nearby NP restaurant. Good enough.
Excellent shower so excellent night's sleep.

25th July
Breakfast at the NP restaurant.

Visit the on-site elephant museum.
then heading on to exit at the Polohawa Gate but just before the exit decided to visit an iron smelting archeological ruin.

Ruin was fair but the guide mentioned that a lioness and two cubs were at the anthill some 300m away from us. Sure 'nuff.

The run for the border.

24th July Wednesday

Geoff clearly daunted by the 4 hours of beaucracy that it took for him to cross from SA to Zim on the way up has nothing planned for today other than to get across the border.

From Norma-Jean's Resort to the border is about 4 hours although once on the south bound main SA to Harare route slight economic uplift was detected. Subtle but there.

The border crossing was a breeze, relatively speaking. $0 and a few lines to get out of Zim. The main issue is not knowing which line to be in and in what order. The chances of lining up and finding out you needed a stamp from a different window first were high.
The lines and associated chaos in the northbound traffic was something to see. Too scared to take any pictures.

headed on south in to Soutanberg and the Mashovhela (Sunrise) Lodge. No wifi, very quiet. 17 for dinner last night just 3 tonight
plesant enough but not pleasant enough to stay the planned two nights. Plan B' was developed to blow off the 2nd night and instead drive in to Kruger NP and hed south in the park rather than drive parallel to it (orig plan)

but

remember that stop at the giant baobob tree yesterday? Remember the bump driving over the rock as we left? Well it punctured the power steering fluid supply line in the Kombi. Getting started early this morning (Thurs 25th) was a good thing as it gave us time to get to the VW dealer in Louis Pritchardt to investigate the weird noises.

Looks like we are going to be all good.

Sunrise Lodge and plan B'

24th July

Fairly unimpressive lodge. Only guests tonight. Private game reserve but surrounded by hunting territory hence the game is constantly spooked.

Dinner was butter with veg.

One thing cool at the Sunrise Lodge was the "donkey"/solar hot water gizmo

Plan B' prime is hatched. Instead of 2 nights at this place forfeit the 2nd night and instead spend a day and a night in Kruger NP

Rhodes Matopo to Great Zim

22nd July
Rhodes grave.
dinner at Big Cave Lodge

23rd July Tuesday

early start from Big Cave Lodge. 4hr drive to Geat Zimbabwe.

Beautiful day. excellent ruins. Very little on-site information except in the really well layed out museum. No photos allowed so no record of the really good information. The museum is really outstanding.

fill in Great Zim detail here

The site was populated with a class from Makuro University, a middle school and a primary school. The primary school kids returned to their large school bus in the parking lot. Everyone on board. Bus quiet then all windows flung open and all the trash simulataneously got thrown out of every window. Obviously the teacher had declared clean-up time.

Drive on to nearby Norma-Jean's guest house. Very chintzy english type cottages. Stunningly lush gardens overlooking lake. All very pleasant.
